Blessed…Chosen…Adopted…

January 29, 2014

When we began the adoption process and started telling people that we were
adopting we quickly learned that there are some odd responses, questions and comments about adoption.

There are plenty of posts out there like “10 things not to say to an adoptive parent” or “5 things not to ask about an adopted child” and I’m not going there. We welcome questions about our adoption and I really do believe that the majority of people truly ask questions out of curiosity and not out of ill will. When thoughtless or uneducated comments come our way I will not be shy in redirecting
and speaking the truth about adoption.

One of the comments we’ve heard most often and it makes us uncomfortable (but again, I believe that it comes from a good intention) is:

“You’re doing such a good thing” or “He is so lucky”

We aren’t adopting to rescue. We are adopting because God has placed it on our hearts and we know our family would not be complete without the addition of our third son. Every child deserves a family and adoption is a beautiful picture of God’s love for us. Parenting is tough, no matter how a child enters a family and we daily thank the Lord for the blessing of all three of our sons – 2 that came biologically and the third that we are so excited to travel to and meet soon! I think we are the “lucky” ones!

Ephesians 1:4-5 describes God’s plan of adoption for us into His family through sending His son. And because of that, I can say the following:

It’s a new print that I’m excited to have up in the shop.

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
Ephesians 1:4-5 (NLT)
