Cedarburg Strawberry Festival

There’s a local upcoming art festival this weekend that I have attended for years and this year I’m excited to take part in it.
The Cedarburg Strawberry Festival takes place in the heart of the sweetest downtown I know, a town that will always have a special place in my heart.

I’ll be there with a booth for my jewelry line, Corliss.

Now, here’s why Cedarburg is so special to me. Corliss was my grandmother’s name (my mom’s mother). My mom’s father passed away when she was young and Corliss eventually remarried a gentleman named Stephan Fischer
(growing up, we called him Grandpa Steve).

Grandpa Steve was the mayor of Cedarburg for three different terms from 1946-1982.
What I love about downtown Cedarburg is the small town feel and all the historic buildings.
Although it was unpopular at the time, Grandpa Steve was credited with saving many of those. His third run for office was out of a desire to save a 96 year old church. Once elected again, he refused demolition and it still stands today. A few years later, he went on to save the mill on the main street (Washington Ave) from becoming a gas station. The historic mill is now Cedar Creek Settlement, home to art studios, specialty shops and a winery.

I’m not sure if he knew he was setting the foundation for what is now Cedarburg’s historic district, but it’s such a greatly preserved town.

A favorite comment of mine about Grandpa Steve is from the book;
Cedarburg, A History Set in Stone,
“Stephan Fischer would move Cedarburg into its future by preserving its past”

So, if you’re local – I hope you’ll stop out this weekend for this fun, free festival.
